Private Residence VII

Palo Alto
CA
2008
Building a house on a busy non-residential street poses challenges of scale, privacy, and sound. Thus, this house is a modern collision of nearly solid boxes in front but quickly opens onto a courtyard faced by a sloped wall library, the kitchen and living room spaces. Centered around the courtyard and available light, the house’s simple forms fit into the commercial area but provide varying spaces inside for social or family activities that are protected from the noise of the street beyond.
