Private Residence VI

Palo Alto
We were asked to completely renovate this home with an eye to modern technological needs but also to be mindful of the original intentions of Joseph Eichler.

The home had been divided into a series of similar sized rooms, each looking in various directions and only one fronting on the courtyard. Further, the courtyard had been allowed to decay. Our immediate approach was to reconfigure the house around the courtyard and the backyard and to make the house light, open, and flowing. The rear wall of glass was rebuilt, the kitchen moved and the courtyard converted to a family room, which, depending on the position of the motorized retractable skylight, is either enclosed or open space. The two walls of the courtyard that face the living spaces have been removed so that the kitchen, dining, living and family spaces flow together and merge into the backyard.
